Beginner Piano Lessons Age 6+

What can your child expect from their lesson?

Introduction to the Piano

The first lesson will include time learning about the instrument, its keys and basic mechanics. We will also look at how to sit properly at the piano, how to place fingers on the keys and simple exercises to try at home to make learning quicker and easier.

Fundamental Skills

Your child’s first few lessons will focus on developing skills such as hand positions, finger strength and hand-eye coordination. They will try clapping out simple rhythms and counting in time to a beat.

Reading Music

Over time, note names, rests and other musical symbols and vocabulary will be introduced.

Playing Simple Tunes

You will be surprised at how quickly your child picks up simple tunes. We will introduce short exercises too to build confidence an and accomplishment.

Technique and Posture

We emphasise the need for proper hand positioning, finger placement and overall body posture from the first lesson. Getting these basics correct from the off ensures bad habits do not creep in (which can cause delays to progress). We provide checklists for parents and carers to ensure these basics are observed whilst practising at home.

Ear Training

Exercises to enhance your child’s ability to recognise pitches, tones, and musical patterns will be taught from an early stage.

Creative Expression

As your child develops their skills, they will have the opportunity for improvisation and creation of original music to encourage artistic exploration.

Practice Routine

During your child’s lesson, guidance will be given in how to practise and how often. A regular, focused practice routine is vital to reinforce learning and ensure your child gains as much from their lesson as possible.

Your role as a parent or carer

We very much encourage you to remain with your child during their lesson as there will be a lot for them to think about. Even remembering how to sit or place their fingers on the piano will be challenging for young children. You are very much part of their musical journey.
